NCCM stated:
The recent attack at Chin Chin Side Street is disturbing. It is especially disturbing given that it happened hours after a post on the page. While the police continue to investigate, there is no doubt in our minds that the group does not meet Facebook’s Community Standards. Share this post to let Facebook know that we don’t accept hate on this platform.

Dear Sir/Madam
I write this letter to formally request that the page “Boycott Halal in Canada” be formally removed from Facebook in the aftermath of Chin Chin Street Side Kitchen being vandalized in Toronto, Ontario, after being spotlighted by the anti-Halal Facebook group.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit organization- Built from within the Canadian Muslim community, NCCM is a leading voice for civic engagement and the promotion of an rights.
While we strongly champion the need for free speech, we also understand that hate speech undermines who we are as a nation.
When discussing the Ethics of Halal Slaughter who decides it is hate speech?
In the decision of the Supreme Court of Canada in Saskatchewan (Human Rights Commission) v Whatcott, 2013 SCC 11, Justice Rothstein noted that hate speech means using expression that exposes a group to hatred, Hate speech seeks to delegitimize group members in the eyes of the majority, reducing their social standing and acceptance within society. Hate speech, therefore, must be looked at as beyond distress to individual group members. It can have a societal impact.
Is Justice Rothstein telling us it is a crime to detest a group that behaves in manner that is detestable?
The Facebook page “Boycott Halal in Canada” is a page that traffics in thinly veiled Islamophobia. The group exposes targeted individuals or groups to hatred and hatred by others on the basis of a protected characteristic, namely religion. We of course would support the right of all Canadians to engage in a discussion regarding Muslim praxis, including the ethics of consuming meat and/or slaughtering practices. The Facebook page “Boycott Halal in Canada” does nothing of the sort. Rather; much as “boycotting kosher” is thinly veiled anti-Semitism. The “Boycott Halal in Canada” page seems to encourage perverse acts of xenophobia against communities:
- A post seems to encourage putting pork and gelatin products into halal food. as it will be “tainted only to Muslims”;
- A post asserts that buying Cavendish fries serves to have “unsuspecting buyers to pay the Islamic tax to further their agenda”;
- A post asserts that Mexico now has too many Muslims, “Try googling it… you might be surprised, There are a lot of muslims in Mexico now.”
- Another post asserts that halal food serves, “to separate gullible food companies and consumers from their money, and as a means to finance Jihad.”
- Another post asserts that a halal food expo was “run by [a] terrorist”.
- Admins on the page asserted that they “won’t even visit Mississauga” because of the halal food restaurants there;
- A post noted that after a chicken manufacturer recalled chicken, “Has terrorism been ruled out? Is it even being looked at? Tyson has a troubled history with its large Muslim migrant workforce.”
Top liked comments include pictures with a nuclear explosion. The caption, “Some cancers must be treated with radiation, Islam is one of them.”
The above-noted posts are all from the last eight months.
Let us be further clear: merely hours after Chin Chin Street Side Kitchen was targeted in a post on “Boycott Halal in Canada”, the restaurant was vandalized.
While police continue to investigate Whether the vandalization of Chin Chin Street Side Kitchen was directly linked to the post, or motivated by hate, it is clear to us that the “Boycott Halal in Canada page” does not seem to adhere to Facebook’ s Community Standards Guide under Chapter III, “Objectionable Content”. The Facebook group appears to promote content that is a direct attack on people based on a protected characteristic, namely religion, and constitutes dehumanizing speech, statements of inferiority, or calls for exclusion- The group further creates an environment of intimidation and may directly, or indirectly, promote real-world violence against Muslim communities,
We formally request that Facebook undertake a thorough review of “Boycott Halal in Canada” to determine whether it is in violation of Facebook’s Community Standards Guide.
